Archive photographs retain their original image content. The illustrated panorama above is new decorative artwork. Neither serves as evidence for a lineage claim.

READ WITH CONTEXT

A name is the starting point.

01

Look at the claim

Recorded usage, a classification and a lineage tradition may have different evidence. Notes sit beside the claim they qualify.

02

Check place and period

Browse selected Punjab and AJK records. Book passages may also name places in wider historical Punjab; their district names and boundaries are dated.

03

Keep the qualification

Copying a summary includes its caveat and sources. Marking a record reviewed records your editorial progress, not proven ancestry.

Evidence labels and coverage

Context located means an independent source was located for at least one specific statement. Other parts of the record may still need verification.

Research lead means the entry currently rests on project material. Its name, locality or classification needs a more specific reference before factual use.

Reported tradition identifies an attributed claim. Recording a tradition does not establish its genealogy. Searchable source labels that remain uncertain are clearly marked.

1881 grouping follows the part and section of Panjab Castes where a name is discussed, with headings lightly reworded. It shows where the book places a name, not a community's status or descent. Occupational entries describe 1881 work and census headings, not present-day families.

The collection is selected, not exhaustive. It does not represent all of historical Punjab or the whole Kashmir region. The landscape illustration is decorative and does not show political boundaries or clan emblems.
